The Anime Nostalgia Podcast ep 09

image
2013 is coming to a close. So join me and special guest Zee of the Armchair Fandomologists Podcast as we talk about some of the notable releases and re-releases of older anime that came out this year and got announced for next year! Some good, some bad, and some titles that were just hilariously weird. We obviously couldn't cover them all, but we tried to cram in as much as humanly possible, just for your holiday enjoyment. Special thanks to Nitro for making my intro music festive for the occasion!

I sadly had to cut out the bits where I mentioned notable manga releases just because we were already running pretty long, so have a list instead!

Some notable older manga titles that came out/where announced in 2013:

As always, feel free to give me your thoughts and comments on this and for future episodes! Thanks for listening and have a safe and fun holiday!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast ep 08

Anime music holds a special place in many fans' hearts, and we're no exception! Returning guests Nitro (who you might remember from the Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki ep) and CandyAppleCat (who was my first ever guest on ep #1!) discuss our Top 10 personal favorite opening & ending theme songs with me from older anime. Listen to us ramble about some of our favorite songs and the anime they came from--the good, the bad, and the downright awful. What will we pick? You'll have to listen to it all to hear our lists!

Some links we mentioned in the podcast:
On Youtube - Kasho No Tsuki Theme by Nakamura YurikoThe somewhat obscure (but very lovely!) ending theme to the OAV of the same name.

On Youtube - Macross: Angel's Voice
And amazing fan creation mixing Basara (of Macross 7) and Minmay (of Macross) vocals of "Angel Voice" to create a beautiful duet between the two.

On Youtube - Mari Ijima Rock Masters 5 "Do You Remember Love?"
Mari Ijima performs a piano-only version of the classic "Do You Remember Love?" for Japan's Rock & Folk Masters Live.

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast ep 07

Just in time for Halloween, this episode is all about Ghost in the Shell!...ok, so Ghost in the Shell has little to do with Ghosts (or Shells!) But in this episode, returning guest NewtypeLady (who you might remember from my Gundam episode not too long ago) & I talk about the legacy of Masamune Shirow's 80s cyberpunk classic, and the many incarnations of it and The Major. Listen as we talk about philosophy, Mamoru Oshii's dog, and what a surprisingly great role-model Major Motoko Kusanagi is for women & cyborgs everywhere.

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast ep 06

image

Here's a shorter in-between-longer-episodes ep of The Anime Nostalgia Podcast, in which I answer the "40 Anime Questions" meme that's been floating around Tumblr here and there. I figured this was a fun way for my listeners who don't know me all that well to get a bit of an idea of what kind of stuff I liked, mixed with a little of my first anime titles and personal opinions.

Stream the episode above, or [Direct Download]

If you're more into podcast episodes where I talk to guests about specific topics, fear not--I have another episode just like that (which I'm editing as we speak!) that will be released before the end of the month. So hopefully this will tide you over until then.

(I should note that when I copied down the meme, I apparently got a copy of it where 1 question was accidentally asked twice...it seems to have been revised since then, thankfully. If you want to do the meme yourself, check out the questions here.)

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast ep 05

image

Did you know that Hayao Miyazaki worked on part of the original Lupin the Third anime? Or that the animation team that would become Studio Ghibli helped animate some American films, like 1977's The Hobbit? In this episode, join me and longtime friend Nitro as we talk about Miyazaki's works before and after Studio Ghibli, Ghibli films that came out before 2002, as well as Ghibli's ties to things like Yoko Kano and video games! (I do apologize--the audio in this episode has some cracking & popping in places for some reason. I'm not sure if it was from something that happened while I was recording, but I couldn't get rid of all of it when I edited it. I'll make sure to be extra careful next episode!)

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast ep 04

Gundam has been a staple in anime fans' libraries for generations now. But as time goes by, younger fans might not know much about it, or where to even start when it comes to Gundam's library of titles. Well, if you've never tried to tackle the world of Gundam, you're in luck! Resident Knower-of-all-things-Gundam and friend of mine Newtypelady has kindly offered to help explain some of the basics of the Gundam Universe for people (like me!) who might not know much, and want to know more (or for those who do, a walk down memory lane of all things Gundam, then and now). Also featured: laughing awkwardly about the terrible racism of G Gundam, comparing Gundam Wing to Sailor Moon, and singing about Haro.

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast ep 03 - ReView: Revolutionary Girl Utena

image
Introducing the first in Anime Nostalgia's "ReView" episodes!
What is a "ReView" episode, you might ask? Well, it's my highly-clever (ok not really) title for episodes where I go back and watch an older title I haven't seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that time's gone by and I'm a little older.
For my first ReView episode, I asked around my circle of friends as to what title they'd be interested in hearing about first, and I was surprised to see that almost all of them wanted Utena! So by popular demand, here it is:

Relevant links:

Buy Part 1 of Utena
The Right Stuf International / Amazon

Nozomi's Official Utena Website (with interviews & lots of info!)

ReView episodes will be shorter than normal episodes (This one's under 50 mins, as apposed to my Guest/Topic episodes that can go as long as 2 hours!), and will be released here and there, in between Guest/Topic episodes from time to time, just as something different to mix things up a bit!

And don't worry--for those of you who prefer my episodes with guests where we talk about topics and such, I'm editing a new one as we speak (this one all about the world of Gundam!), which will be released in the next week or two. This is just to tide you over. ;D

As always, feel free to leave me your thoughts and ideas for future episodes (ReView or otherwise!), and thanks for listening!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast ep 02 - Sailor Moon talk with NatsukiGirl

image
Episode 2 is here! With my special guest, NatsukiGirl; who not only has run the Sailor Moon fanpage SweetUsagi since the late 90s, but also has a series of informative Youtube videos on collecting Japanese manga.
Listen as we reminisce & ramble about being young Sailor Moon fans in the 90s, how Sailor Moon effected us when it came to anime/manga fandom, and general talk of all things Sailor Moon...Basically trying to touch all the bases.

Stream the episode above or [Direct Download]

As I said in the podcast numerous times, this definitely won't be the only episode I do concerning Sailor Moon since it's SUCH a prolific body of work, but hopefully you enjoy our first ever Sailor Moon episode!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast ep 01 - Convention Talk with CandyAppleCat

It's finally here! The revamped Anime Nostalgia Podcast! In this episode, I talk to longtime fan & friend of mine, Heather (aka @CandyAppleCat). She's been going to A-kon longer than I have (since I just moved here about 5 years ago), so we talk about this years A-kon as compared to ones prior. I pick Heather's brain about how she got into anime, her feelings on fansubbing today, and various similar topics--as well as the recent resurgence of popularity for things like Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon, and Rose of Versailles. Sit down and listen in!

Or [ Direct Download ]

If you listened to my Pilot episode (Ep. 0), you'll notice the format is different than the "review" episode I did. Fear not, review episodes will still be similar (though with considerably less music). I just thought it'd be fun to alternate between reviews and talking with guests from time to time.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy! Feel free to leave me your thoughts, opinions, and ideas for future episodes, and thanks for listening!

ひさしぶり!

Hey, all! It's been a while, eh?
Real life has once again crept up on me, and so the podcast had fallen to the wayside. But I am more determined than ever to get up and running once more, this time on a more regular basis! To help me get pumped up for this, I've created a Tumblr blog for the podcast as well here: http://animenostalgia.tumblr.com/

This will basically be a supplement to this blog and the podcast itself, where in between podcasts I'll be blogging relevant stuff--news, images, whatever--to anime of the past. So feel free to add it and check it out!

Of course I'm not abandoning this place for Tumblr, think of it as a supplement to this one, like I said. ;)

Until next time!
