The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 118: Green Legend Ran with MDi

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

The Saturday Anime series is back! These are episodes where we talk about anime that aired on the Saturday Anime block of Sci-Fi Channel back in the 90s on US Cable TV. This month, MDi is back to talk with me about a title that was once one of Pioneer Anime’s original flagship titles in the US, but has since kind of become forgotten---Green Legend Ran! Listen as we revisit this title to see if this environmental sci-fi fantasy OAV-edited-to-movie-for-Sci-Fi-Channel’s-broadcast still holds up, having to deal with the infamous WordFit System, and how this title is connected to....Snakes on a Plane??? You’ll have to listen to find out how!

Review: Spirited Away Live On Stage

An image of the Spirited Away Live on Stage theatrical poster, showing both actresses who play Chichiro.

In 2002, I remember excitedly going to a small arthouse theater in Seattle with a close friend to see Hayo Miyazaki’s big new animated film, the first he’d made since coming out of “retirement”. Seeing Spirited Away on a big screen was nothing short of magical, and I came out of the theater with a huge grin plastered on my face that didn’t leave for hours.

20 years later, I find myself seated in a much bigger theater for the theatrical recording of a stage play based on Spirited Away. This is a real treat, as Japanese stage plays (let alone ones based on anime) are rarely ever screened here in the US. As the lights dim, and the recorded version of the play begins on the big screen in front of me, I felt that same grin returning–one that pretty much stayed on my face for two hours.

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 117: Leiji Matsumoto Tribute Livestream with Zack Davisson

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

In February of 2023, we learned that we lost an icon of not just manga and anime, but a pillar of otaku fandom as we know it: Leiji Matsumoto. And so this month, we celebrated him and his beautiful Leijiverse by having a fan-made Memorial Livestream. For those that missed out on it, this is the audio from said livestream, in handy podcast form! The first part of the stream I was joined by Leiji Matsumoto translator and superfan, Zack Davisson, as we give some background on Matsumoto’s live and work. After that, I reached out to the Leijiverse fandom to get audio and written submissions on not only how Matsumoto’s work touched our hearts, but also significantly changed some of our lives. Get those tissues ready, because there’s sure to be some tears shed in this heartfelt, extra-long episode!

Memorial Stream for the Legendary Leiji Matsumoto

Hello, friends! This month on the Anime Nostalgia Podcast, I’m going to try something different. In honor of the passing of the iconic Leiji Matsumoto, I’ll be live streaming a fan memorial with translator Zack Davisson on March 19th, 2023 at 7PM Pacific time on my personal Twitch account here. The first part of the stream, Zack & I will be talking about Matsumoto’s life, his work, and why he is so important to fandom around the world. The second part of the stream, I want to open the floor to fans to share why they love Matsumoto’s work, why his stories were so special to them, or any other memories they’d like to share. I’ve decided that the best way to do this is by submitting written or recorded pieces from you, the fans! If you’d like to contribute to this part of the stream, feel free to either send a short recorded audio file for me to play on stream (preferably wav or mp3) OR, if you’d like me to read it for you, you can send short written submissions instead to AnimeNostalgiaPodcast(AT)gmail.com. Please get these written or recorded submissions emailed in by MARCH 17th, 2023 so that I have enough time to compile them all for the stream! Also, please note that depending on how many submissions I receive, I cannot promise I can share ALL of them, but I will try my best! You can also just come to the stream and chat with others about Matsumoto if you don’t feel like sharing anything personal.

After the livestream, I’ll be releasing an edited version of the audio from the stream as this month’s podcast episode. So if you can’t make it, you’ll still be able to listen!

Let’s all come together and share our love for the works of Leiji Matsumoto!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 116: ReView: Urusei Yatsura Movie 1 - Only You

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

This month’s episode is another short ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. This month, to celebrate not only the new Urusei Yatsura TV anime and the month of Valentine’s Day, let’s revisit the very first Urusei Yatsura: Only You--the series’ first theatrical film! The whole Tomobiki gang makes the show a lot of fun, but can they satisfyingly fill a nearly 2 hour long movie? Let’s see what’s to love about it in this month’s rewatch!

This month, we’re going down the rabbit hole to revisit a lesser known OVA based off a CLAMP title that came out in the 90s: Miyuki-chan in Wonderland. Is it a fun adventure, or should we forget we ever peered into the looking glass? Let’s find out!
