What was it like being an anime & manga fan before the 2000s? And were some of my favorite anime series really as good as I remember them? Welcome to the Anime Nostalgia Podcast, a mix of anime & manga history, reviews, and talks with other fans on titles and aspects of fandom from everywhere from the 70s to the 90s!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 112: Berserk '97 25th Anniversary with Mayra
October is not only spooky month, but it’s also the 25th anniversary of the very first Berserk anime adaptation! So what better time to discuss this dark fantasy horror series with my good friend and huge Berserk fan, Mayra, who you might remember from my episode on the oral history of anime penpaling! For the first part of the episode, we go over the history of Berserk, some of it’s main characters, celebrating Kentaro Miura’s original manga, and why it’s such a notable & important work. Then the second half is Spoiler Talk, for all of you who’re already familiar with the series! Please note that since Berserk IS a dark fantasy that contains a LOT of heavy topics, we do discuss things like dealing with trauma, etc. in the Spoiler half of the podcast.

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 111: ReView: Hyper Doll

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!
This month’s episode is another short ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. This month, I’m saying goodbye to Summer with a short OVA that features plenty of your typical Summery things in anime: pools, swimming, festivals, yukata...and giant alien monsters?? Yup, we’re revisiting a lesser-remembered Pioneer anime that never became a hit: Hyper Doll! Listen to find out why this 2-episode OVA had me going on a wild goose chase searching for a Japanese 80s variety show!

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!
Last month, the beginning of a well-loved OVA series turned 30 years old: Yasuhiro Imagawa’s love letter to mangaka Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s career, Giant Robo: The Animation (aka Giant Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still)! And to celebrate this momentous occasion, Casey (aka MinovskyArticle) has returned to talk about all things Robo with me! For the first part of the podcast, we discuss in a spoiler-free way what exactly the series is, it’s history, why it’s special, and why you should check it out! After that, we go all out in the spoiler-zone to gush about our favorite characters, scenes, and answer all your listener questions! (Spoiler talk starts at around the 1:34:17 mark.) So sit back, relax, and celebrate one of our favorite anime series with us in this GIANT-sized, nearly 3-hour long episode!

Not only is June the 50th Anniversary of Go Nagai’s manga, but in the US June is also Pride Month! And at the request of AJ (who won the choice of a full podcast episode topic in my ANP Says Trans Rights raffle), we’re talking all about the iconic queer-coded action-horror classic Devilman! Go Nagai superfan Salvatore is back with me this month to talk all about the original 70s manga, TV series, AND the 80s/90s OVA series. We discuss differences between them, what we love & maybe not love so much about each version, and the absolutely MASSIVE influence Go Nagai’s work has had over manga & anime in the last 50 years in this fun, extra-long episode!
