This month’s episode is another short ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. It's Halloween season once again, so for this month's ReView episode, let's revisit a more unconventional pick for a Halloween movie night: the 1994 anime OVA adaptation of Hideyuki Kikuchi's Darkside Blues! Will this dystopian cybergoth thriller make for some great vibes, or is it just not "all that jazz"? Let's revisit it and find out!

That's right, this month, I'm revisiting the Gainax-made 1988 OVA based off of Masamune Shirow's Appleseed! Is this a great Summer popcorn flick, or does it belong at the bottom of the bargain bin? Let's find out together!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 103: Roujin Z Talk with Paul Chapman

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

The Saturday Anime series is back! These are episodes where we talk about anime that aired on the Saturday Anime block of Sci-Fi Channel back in the 90s on US Cable TV. This month just happens to be the 30th anniversary of Katsuhiro Otomo's Roujin Z, so what better time to revisit it? And joining me is new guest to the show, from The Greatest Movie Ever Podcast, it's Paul Chapman! Listen as we discuss how well the movie's social commentary has aged, why it's ok that it wasn't the "next Akira", and lamenting the fact that we're definitely getting older. Mild spoilers for the basic plot throughout, with spoilers for the ending starting around the 55:01 mark.

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 78: Akira Talk with Vrai

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

The Saturday Anime series continues with one of the most iconic anime (and manga) to ever be made: AKIRA! And with me to talk a bit about this massively influential franchise is new guest to the show Vrai Kaiser (they/them). Even with 2 hours to chat about Akira, we only manage to touch the tip of the iceberg on what makes this Katsuhiro Otomo classic so special. Listen as we discuss how we first saw this film far too young, how it appealed to more folks than just your typical anime fans, and why this 80s creation is a little too prophetic on how life in 2019 ended up being. Also in this episode: the premiere of my brand new opening theme!.....that you don’t hear until the end. (Whoops.)

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

Happy 2018, everyone! This month’s episode is another ReView! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it’s my highly-clever (ok not really) title for episodes where I go back and watch an older title I haven’t seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time’s gone by. December marked the 30th anniversary of one of the first unedited, subtitled, officially licensed anime titles released in the US! So let’s take a closer look at 1987′s Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01.

February 25, 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of Bubblegum Crisis’ original release in Japan! So to celebrate, I’ve invited Sean of Zimmerit.moe to talk all about it: the many western influences that inspired it, why it’s label of “cyberpunk” is a bit of a misnomer, and how some aspects of it were surprisingly progressive for an 80s OAV.

With all the talk about the upcoming live action Ghost in the Shell movie, what better time to revisit another (slightly less popular) 90s series about a kick-ass cyborg who sometimes questions what it means to be human! My friend Rachel from RachelLovesComics joins me to talk about Battle Angel Alita: the various incarnations, the sometimes surprisingly relevant themes throughout, and even the 80′s style poofy hair (even though it was the 90s.)

Join us as we give a brief overview on Oshii’s career, the many “creative differences” Oshii’s encountered over the years, and what it was liking writing an academic book on anime.

Just in time for Halloween, this episode is all about Ghost in the Shell!...ok, so Ghost in the Shell has little to do with Ghosts (or Shells!) But in this episode, returning guest NewtypeLady (who you might remember from my Gundam episode not too long ago) & I talk about the legacy of Masamune Shirow's 80s cyberpunk classic, and the many incarnations of it and The Major. Listen as we talk about philosophy, Mamoru Oshii's dog, and what a surprisingly great role-model Major Motoko Kusanagi is for women & cyborgs everywhere.
