Anime Nostalgia Presents: New Anime for Oldtaku – Time of Eve

I often get asked by older anime fans who haven't watched newer anime in ages if I have any suggestions on more “modern” titles I'd recommend—so here's the beginning of a new, sporadic article series that you may see pop up on the blog from time to time! I hope you enjoy it.

ANN Guest Article: Interview with Hiroshi Nagahama

 

I am incredibly honored to have gotten to interview Hiroshi Nagahama (Revolutionary Girl Utena, Mushi-shi, The Flowers of Evil) about his upcoming anime adaptation of Junji Ito's cult-classic horror manga, Uzumaki! If you're a horror fan like me, you're probably looking forward to it's premiere on Adult Swim very soon--so I was excited to ask him about it and what kind of horror has influenced him and his work over the years. Happy 2021! I’m starting the first episode of this brand new year with something a little different. This time, we’re watching a new anime based off a classic, well-loved franchise: Lupin III: The First! Lupin & the gang’s first ever CG animated film! And of course, I recruited friend & fellow Lupin fan Tricia to chat about it, and all things Lupin. Join us as we give our immediate thoughts after watching it and give a rundown on what we liked and didn’t like about this fresh new Lupin anime & how it stacks up to 50 years of Lupin III. (The first part of the episode is relatively spoiler-free, with spoiler-filled talk starting at around the 46:57 mark and continuing on for pretty much the rest of the episode, for those who don’t want to be spoiled!) Also in this episode: Nazis suck, which movie director should Lupin fight, and is Zenigata a himbo?? Tune in and find out!

Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss Modern!

Yesterday I got to see a showing of Haikara-san: Here Comes Miss Modern (Part 1)! It’s a new movie adaptation of the classic late 70s shoujo series by Waki Yamamoto. I really enjoyed it and hope that the rest of the series of films gets a release here!

The story centers around Benio Hanamura, a girl growing up in Taisho-era Japan who wants to live free of the traditional gender roles of going to school simply to train to be “the perfect Japanese housewife”. A brash, fiercely independent (but sweet) girl, Benio would rather climb trees, practice kendo, and read modern women’s magazines than learn to sew or cook for a future husband. She wants to find love on her own terms! But all her plans come crashing down when she meets the man her father wants her to marry. Can she convince her fiance-to-be’s entire family she’s not bride material & end her arranged marriage?

The original Haikara-san is a beloved historical shoujo classic, in the same class as similar releases of the time like Candy Candy and The Rose of Versailles. It’s still playing in some select theaters around the US til June 13 2018, so be sure to check it out if you think it sounds interesting!
