The North American theatrical premiere of Tomcat's Big Adventure!

On April 14th, 2025, the North American premiere of a rare anime film happened in the historic Texas Theatre in Dallas, Texas. While this statement might not seem huge at first glance, if you know a bit of anime history, this is indeed quite an important event.

A photo of the marquee of The Texas Theatre, showing the title "TOMCAT'S BIG ADVENTURE" as the night's film.

For those not in the know, a little history lesson is in order. Chibineko Tom no Daibouken, better known as Tomcat’s Big Adventure online, is an anime film released in 1992 that had a pretty rough production history. In a nutshell: the story goes that after five years of production, the movie’s theatrical release was canceled due to their distribution company going bankrupt (as this was around the time of Japan’s Bubble Economy finally bursting), leading to only a few scattered showings in small venues and supposedly a handful of regional Japanese TV airings. This was a tragedy, as even though Tomcat’s Big Adventure is a kids movie, it was produced with an incredible A-list of staff & cast: The film was the directorial debut of the late Ryutaro Nakamura, who anime fans probably know better as the director of Serial Experiments Lain. Character designer and Animation director Manabu Ohashi might be better known to some as Mao Lamdo, the creator of the Cloud short in cult-favorite Robot Carnival, not to mention his gorgeous key animation in projects like The Fantastic Adventures of Unico, his work on the Space Adventure Cobra opening, and the second ending theme to Sailor Moon, “Moon Princess”, just to name a few. Music for the film was scored by the great Kenji Kawai of the original Ranma ½ and Ghost in the Shell fame. Key animators included such talents as Koichi Arai (AkiraMacross PlusSailor Moon R: The Movie) and Toshiyuki Inoue (Kiki’s Delivery ServiceVenus WarsMemories short Magnetic Rose). The voice cast includes heavy-hitters like the late Toshiko Fujita (Rui in Cat’s Eye, Taichi in Digimon Adventure) as Tom, Masako Nozawa (Son Goku in Dragon Ball, Tetsuro in Galaxy Express 999) as Mark, Minami Takayama (Kiki in Kiki’s Delivery Service, Conan in Great Detective Conan/Case Closed) as Alex, Akio Otsuka (Batou in Ghost in the Shell, the title character of Black Jack) as Leonis…As you can see, almost every person involved, I could write an entire article JUST on them and their career accomplishments. That’s how impressive this movie’s DNA is.

So it’s no surprise that for years, the film was held in high regard as a thing of legend–some folks in the anime industry even wondered if it truly existed at all, given how few people had ever seen the finished film. But fast-forward 20 years later, an individual named Mitsuhiro Akashi discovered one of their friends actually owned the copyright to the fabled long-lost film, through her late father who had invested in the production. The duo decided to promote the film online, not only leading to online interest from anime fans, but to small theater showings in Japan and eventually a successful Japanese crowdfunding to remaster the film back in 2015. As of this writing, the only blurays of the film that exist are the now sold-out ones that Japanese backers to this campaign could get, and the film isn’t streaming online (legally or otherwise).

And now, you have a better understanding as to just why getting to see Tomcat’s Big Adventure is a pretty big deal!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 95: Lupin III: The First with Tricia

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

Happy 2021! I’m starting the first episode of this brand new year with something a little different. This time, we’re watching a new anime based off a classic, well-loved franchise:
Lupin III: The First! Lupin & the gang’s first ever CG animated film! And of course, I recruited friend & fellow Lupin fan Tricia to chat about it, and all things Lupin. Join us as we give our immediate thoughts after watching it and give a rundown on what we liked and didn’t like about this fresh new Lupin anime & how it stacks up to 50 years of Lupin III. (The first part of the episode is relatively spoiler-free, with spoiler-filled talk starting at around the 46:57 mark and continuing on for pretty much the rest of the episode, for those who don’t want to be spoiled!) Also in this episode: Nazis suck, which movie director should Lupin fight, and is Zenigata a himbo?? Tune in and find out!

Also - if you’re listening to this in a timely manner, you have until JAN 22, 2021 to enter my giveaway with Gkids to win your own copy of the movie on bluray here!! So hurry if you haven’t already!

The Anime Nostalgia Podcast - ep 94: 2020 Year In Review with Zee

Subscribers! Be sure to go to the blog to read the description easier & check out links for this episode!

2020 is finally almost over! So you know what that means–that’s right, it’s the Year in Review! And much like Krampus, Zee is back to help discuss the results of my annual year-end survey as filled out by you, the listeners! What older anime titles were you excited to buy (sometimes again) this year, and what titles are you looking forward to coming out in 2021? We also talk about all the memorable news stories from throughout this long, endless garbage fire of a year (though if you are utterly exhausted from hearing about 2020 news things, once you get around the time stamp 2:02:49, you can skip to right around the 3:36:56 mark!) I should note that, due to the year 2020 being ABSOLUTELY cursed, my original audio for this ep didn’t turn out great, so I was forced to fall back on my basic Skype recording, ON TOP OF the fact that the survey results got a little borked. So apologies that this episode is far from perfect, but hopefully it’ll still give you some laughs as we try our best to cast out the demons of this wild ride of a year in this extra long episode (with some bonus bloopers after the ending theme! Happy holidays!!)

1 Year Anniversary Mailbag Contest!

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED! Thanks to all who entered!

Whoa! The Anime Nostalgia Podcast's 1-Year Anniversary is coming up next month! As a thank you to all you listeners for supporting my humble little podcast, I decided a giveaway was in order! YAY, PRIZES!

So here's the details!
Next month's episode, I'll be reuniting with my good pal and first-ever guest on the podcast, Heather! And I thought it would be fun to go through some of the emails I've been getting at the podcast email, answering questions, taking suggestions, all that fun stuff. Heather will help answer and give commentary, so it should be a fun episode. And that's where you guys come in!

To enter the contest, all you have to do is send an email to AnimeNostalgiaPodcast@gmail.com with something for us to read and answer on the new episode: your thoughts about the podcast, ideas for future episodes, general questions...basically anything related to the podcast and/or older anime! Keep it (relatively) clean, keep it fun and enjoyable, and make it interesting! (You can even ask Heather some questions if you want.) We'll pick whichever email we like the most--will it be the one that's the funniest? The best idea for a new episode? The best anecdote on anime fandom in the 80s/90s? We don't know! We'll have to wait and see what kind of emails we get! BUT HURRY! Deadline for email's will be JUNE 1st, 2014! Any emails after that won't be eligible for the contest, so mail it before then!

And what do you win?!
The winner of the contest will receive a copy of the '09 release of Akira on blu-ray, as well 1 random "vintage" single-chapter floppy-style manga comic, and possibly a few other small random goodies! (Oooooh, ahhhh~)

But before you enter, be sure to read the RULES:
  • For this contest, I can only accept entries in North America & Canada. Sorry, I know I have some listeners in other countries, but shipping can get expensive! I promise I'm working on a world-wide giveaway soon!
  • Comments/reblogs/etc do not count as entries! Only emails to AnimeNostalgiaPodcast@gmail.com will be qualified to win.
  • You have to be willing to give me a shipping address to send you your prize! If I don't hear from you or get a shipping address in 1 week after the winner's announced, the prize will be sent to a runner-up.
  • Please no highly inappropriate emails. We don't mind swearing, but try to keep the content PG-13-ish, ok?
  • If you don't want us to read your full name on the episode, be sure to let me know somewhere in the email.
  • If you enter the contest and win, but do not live in North America or Canada, you will be disqualified & your prize will be sent to a runner-up.
  • All entries for the contest must be received by 9 AM CENTRAL TIME, JUNE 1st 2014 to qualify! Any emails received after that will not be eligible to win, sorry!
  • Any questions, feel free to email/message/comment!
We can't wait to read your emails & record the new episode! And thanks again, listeners, for 1 year of podcast fun. I couldn't do it without you guys! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
